Automotive suppliers support initiative against product piracy

The industry initiative “Manufacturers against Product Piracy” (MAPP) was created by a group of CLEPA members to fight against product counterfeiting and to share knowledge on all topics related to brand protection. As part of this initiative, some of the members created the website www.mapp-code.com to make market participants aware of the topic and inform them how they can clearly identify original parts.

Bosch, Continental/ATE, Federal-Mogul Motorparts, GKN, GS1, Mahle, MANN-FILTER, Motorservice, Schaeffler, TRW, WABCO and TecAlliance support the initiative to promote the MAPP code. The exclusive use of original parts improves traffic safety.

Counterfeit replacement parts cause substantial damage to the automotive business and the economy. The European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA) estimates that fake auto parts cost suppliers between five and ten billion euros every year. It is not just about money. Fake parts cost the automotive suppliers lost sales; for the driver there is a substantial safety risk due to unsafe products.

As a measure to distinguish genuine from fake products faster in the future, several participants in the initiative “Manufacturers against Product Piracy” (MAPP) mark their original products with a data matrix barcode based on a coding recommendation created by CLEPA. This unique MAPP code can be checked easily with oneIDentity+, the first IT-based standard solution for the automotive replacement part market. In seconds the user knows whether he has an original replacement part.
