Recognise Original Replacement Parts Securely

With TecIdentify replacement part dealers and garages can recognise original automotive parts quickly and easily.

Similar is not always the same. For counterfeit auto parts the difference can often not be seen at first glance. The result is that garages and traders use or sell fake auto replacement parts without knowing it.

In order to faster distinguish genuine from false parts in the future, several participants in the initiative “Manufacturers against Product Piracy” (MAPP) mark their original products with a Data Matrix barcode. The 2D code can be found either on the packaging or on product and packaging. This way the marked replacement part carries a unique worldwide identification number so that the product can be uniquely identified. The European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA) considers the IT-supported checking with the barcode to be the strongest weapon in the fight against counterfeits.

The security barcode can be easily verified by anyone. The MAPP code must only be read in with a barcode scanner or a camera mobile phone*. The TecCom Internet platform TecIdentify compares the barcode with information in a database to identify original parts immediately. An alternative is to enter the code in the website www.TecIdentify.eu with a keyboard. Within seconds the user receives an answer whether the replacement part he is checking is original.

The highest level of product protection can be achieved by a combination of different security measures. Features like holograms, Holospot, seals or colour codes make it possible to recognise original parts without further help and are a reasonable completion to the MAPP code. However resellers or garages must recognise these markings. With the MAPP code the information is stored in a database secure against counterfeiting. No special knowledge is required.

TecIdentify, the first IT-based standard solution for the Automotive Aftermarket was developed by TecCom in cooperation with the European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA). The solution serves as an authentication centre for all who want to check the authenticity of automotive replacement parts. “With TecIdentify, customs, garages, dealers, manufacturers and end customers can check easily if they have an original replacement part,” says Jürgen Buchert, Managing Director of TecCom.

TecIdentify was awarded a prize in 2008 at the Automechanika trade fair, the innovation prize in the category IT & Management. Real-time checking of auto parts is supported by the initiative “Manufacturers against Product Piracy” (MAPP), a cooperation of leading automotive suppliers (Bosch, Continental/ATE, GKN, MANN+HUMMEL, TRW), CLEPA and TecCom. Additional users of TecIdentify on the industry side are Federal-Mogul, MAHLE and Schaeffler. The companies named are in different phases of code introduction to their product portfolios. Some have already marked the majority with the MAPP code, others only selected product lines. WABCO and ZF Services support TecIdentify as well, but have so far not introduced the MAPP code.
